Nelson’s Blessing of the Fleet returns, honouring tradition and community

Moving tributes to fishermen lost at sea, alongside a ceremonial blessing of today’s working fleet, will once again be at the heart of Nelson’s annual Blessing of the Fleet this month on the 8th-9th May.  Now in its 25th year, the much-loved event returns to the waterfront, bringing together the fishing industry, families and the wider community to honour Nelson’s strong maritime heritage.

Festivities begin at 5.30pm on Friday, the 8th May, with a free fireworks display over Tāhunanui Beach. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or beach chair, enjoy food from local vendors and take in the spectacle. The main event takes place from 1 pm on Saturday, 9th May, at Wakefield Quay, where crowds will gather for the formal blessing ceremony. The service will include a welcome, prayers and blessings from local clergy, a remembrance dedication, and a one-minute silence to honour those who have lost their lives at sea. Following the ceremony, the waterfront will come alive with a parade of working fishing vessels, on-water displays from Coastguard Nelson and Port Nelson tugboats, and a flyover from a classic Yak aircraft.

Visitors can also enjoy fish filleting demonstrations, alongside fresh and cooked seafood available from midday.

Since its inception in 2001, the Blessing of the Fleet has drawn thousands each year. It is both a vibrant celebration of Nelson’s fishing industry and a moment of reflection, recognising the risks faced by those who work at sea and honouring those who have not returned home. This year’s event is proudly supported by Gold Sponsor Sunderland Marine, whose contribution helps ensure the continued success of this important community tradition. As Australasia’s largest fishing port, Nelson has deep connections to the industry, with many in the region involved in fishing and its supporting trades. The event is a powerful reminder of the sector’s role in the local economy and community. The Blessing of the Fleet is also a charity event that raises funds for the Seafarers’ Memorial Trust, which provides emotional and financial support to families affected by loss or injury at sea. Originally established after significant losses to help the community come back together, the event has grown into a cornerstone of the regional calendar and continues to be delivered through the collective support of the Seafarers’ Memorial Trust.

A quarter of a century on, the Blessing of the Fleet remains a meaningful and collaborative event, bringing people together to remember, celebrate, and acknowledge the vital services that help keep seafarers safe.
